The Ballet West Curriculum Design Seminar empowers school directors and their faculty with tools to develop a custom tailored curriculum to meet the needs of their individual studio and incorporate research in best practices to nurture dancers and elevate training for all ages.
The four-day virtual seminar includes explanations of research and the direct applications within the studio.
The Ballet West Academy curriculum utilizes current research in the fields of science and education to create age appropriate instruction at each level. The Ballet West Curriculum Design Seminar empowers school directors and their faculty with tools to develop a custom tailored curriculum to meet the needs of their individual studio and incorporate research in best practices to nurture dancers and elevate training for all ages. The seminar will enrich the experienced directors’ and teachers’ methods, by deepening the understanding of child development, cognitive skills, and learning acquisition patterns.
The four day virtual seminar includes explanations of research and the direct applications within the studio. In addition, guest lectures from Ballet West Faculty and Intermountain Health Team will enhance the seminar. The end goal of this seminar is for directors and faculty to create or refine their studio curriculum utilizing new tools and feedback. This enables each participant to tailor their work specifically for their studio community needs.
Seminars are limited to 30 participants to enable individual feedback.

Day 1
Introduction of Physical, Cognitive and Emotional development ages 3 to teenage
Application of how child development informs curriculum design and studio teaching
Sample of Ballet West Curriculum, Syllabus and Lesson Plans
Day 2
Introduction of Learning Styles
Application of learning styles to skill acquisition and classroom management
Sample of lesson plans incorporating all styles of learners specifically for introduction of new material
Day 3
Guest Lecturer: Jeff Rogers- Supporting boys in structured learning environments
Workshop of material

Guest Lecturer: Intermountain Health
Next steps; Translating knowledge into practice

8 hours of seminar time.
Participants will gain tools to design or refine their own curriculum, syllabi and lesson plans.
Seminar and Consultation
$500
8 hours of seminar time.
Participants will gain tools to design or refine their own curriculum and syllabi.
2 hours of consultation time with Ballet West Curriculum specialist. Participants share their curriculum, to receive feedback and problem solve specific challenges within their studio. The 2 hours of consulting time is available in the 6 weeks following course completion.
Affiliate Program

Following completion of the seminar and consultation, select studio directors may continue in consultation with Ballet West. The affiliate program can include in person site visits to evaluate teaching practices and student outcomes, choreography and production advice and long term planning.

Many examples of syllabi utilized at Ballet West will be shared as examples. However, the specific goal of the seminar is to provide broader approaches to dance training, instead of one set of lesson plans to be imposed on any given class. This series of seminars is designed for an experienced teacher or director, who is looking to enhance the craft of ballet instruction through professional development workshops. The valuable information shared during these seminars enables teachers to re-envision their own curriculum and teaching practices.

While the course is best suited for experienced teachers, new teachers will gain knowledge about child development that can be beneficial to instruction.

No. The last day of each session will include a review of the ideas taught in the seminar. Participants will not be formally tested or judged on their understanding of the material presented. Instead, there will be open communication to help participants tailor the ideas to be used in specific settings.

Yes! Suggested reading and follow-up exercises will be provided to further the learning. Participants who register for consultation package will receive feedback on the curriculum they design.

The seminar is designed for dancers, teachers, and directors with a high level of ballet knowledge and teaching experience. The education concepts that are explored can be applied to other dance forms as well.

All attendees will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the seminar. Those who participate in the affiliate program may pursue approval for a Ballet West Academy endorsed curriculum.
